Who is Carlos?

My full name is Carlos Olmo Bosco and they call me vagamundos- globe trotter. I discovered “the other way of travelling” when I was 16 years old, when I travelled around Spain with a friend during the summer of 1976 with only 30 euros in my pocket, my bag-pack an sleeping sack and an enormous will to know Spain after Franco’s death. Many boring hours on the road, many nights without sleeping on beaches and 3 months without a proper meal made my interests and base to travel around the world.

Since then I have visited more than 100 countries (I cannot count them anymore), and most of all I have learned to love and respect other cultures and ways of believing. My travelling spirit has not decreased with the years but on the contrary my will to know other places has increased. During 20 years I have tried to arrange both my professional life in the IT world with travelling, but at last the second one has won the battle and since 2000 I dedicate to “travel to live” instead of “live to travel”.

Reading “the little Prince” I learned that the best trip is the interior one, but until I find the way I will keep on travelling the external world. The camino of Santiago can be a good stage to learn the Internal Way or camino.

The idea of vagamundos.net, my first project on Internet, started with some trips to Patagonia and Thailand at the beginning of 2000, travelling around the wide and extensive landscapes of “the World of the Last World” and the tribes of the North Mountains respectively. There I realized about the impact which Internet is having around the world, since the depopulated Patagonia as well as the towns at the frontier of Thailand and Laos, next to each traditional market there is always a cyber- place, usually very crowded where you can have one hour connection for the amount of 1 € = 1 $.

Why the name of Vagamundos?. Vagamundos was created with the wish of travelling without any schedule, no rush, no objectives, stopping everywhere because yes; and tasting slowly the human relations; therefore the name says it all “vagar por el mundo” which in English means to travel without any worries rush or objectives around the world.

Why the name of the project is Trip around the world in 80 cybercafes? Julio Verne, one of my favourites writers when I was a kid, even now, made me dream about travelling the world as he did in his stories, and to use one of those exotic means of transport as the balloon; some years after, I have fulfilled some of those dreams, and the name of the project I dedicate it to him.

With caminosantiago.com I am accomplishing a new project, which is compatible with vagamunods, which is at the same time more local and universal, because Camino de Santiago which finishes next to my home town in Galicia, is probably the most antique and universal pilgrim that exists. As Gatheo said “Europe was formed in the Camino of Santiago” and in 1987 was declared “Cultural European Itinerary” by the EC.

I travel very light, the only technological equipment that I carry is a digital camera Olympus i4000 waterproof, something necessary for the Camino de Santiago, a digital recorders and a a pair of prismatic, also Olympus, and a video camera SONY TRV-80 mini DV. The rest of my luggage you can find it in the section named “what does Carlos carry in his backpack?”
