On foot, by bike or on horseback
To obtain the so called ‘Compostela’, you have to walk or ride on horse at least 100 km and bike at least 200 km. The majority walks (77%) and bikes (22,5%). This leaves 0,5% which do the Camino on horseback. The best season to do the Camino is from march to october, because the rest of the year the temperature is to low and you can easily get stuck in the mud and get in trouble because of heavy showers.
Apart from that, there are a lot of webpages with personal experiences of people who do the Camino on bike. Some of the most actualised walking guides can be used by bikers also:
The Road to Santiago. A practical Guide for Pilgrims (Everest/M. Bravo Lazano 1996).This is one of the biggest handbooks about the Camino, edited by Everest. Without any doubts, Everest is the editor who has the largest collection of editions on Saint Jacob and evertything which is connected to him, for example the Camino. The guide comes with a practical "road book" with maps which you can bring along on the route in a waterproof plastic holder. The guide and the handbook are very usefull for walkers as well as bikers.
"El Camino de Santiago a Pie". This is an edition of El País-Aguilar. It is one of the best general guides about the Camino together with the edition of Everest. A huge amount of facts, anecdotes and special stories about the Camino were collected by Paco Nadal, a well known expert on this matter. The guide is actualised and very suitable for bikers.
The Way of St James (lascelles, 1993) discribes the route from Col du Somport, or Roncesvalles. Although it doesn’t offer detailed descriptions, the maps are very good on a scale of 1:75.000. It also includes accomodation lists.
The Way of St James: Spain (Cicerone/A. Raju, 1994) Short route description from Roncesvalles to Santiago de Compostela, not a lot af practical information. Added are supplements with the routes from St-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Roncesvalles and from Santiago de Compostela to Finisterre.
Apart from these guides, there are some special guides for bikers only:
"El Camino de Santiago en Bicicleta". This is an free edition of the Cultural Board of the Xunta de Galicia and is a 30 page summary of the book "Sempre no Camiño". It describes the main parts of the route with maps and detailed descriptions of the different laps.
"Sempre no Camiño: El Camino de Santiago en bicicleta de montaña". Editor: Xunta de Galicia. The book was compiled in 1993 by Carlos J. Crespo. It is a beautiful edition, but not entirely up to date.
If you want to do the Camino on horseback, it’s necesary to make a detailed plan, because there aren’t many stables along the way. There is a book with detailed description of the Camino Francés on horseback.
There are specialised agencies that organises everything for you, you just go on top of the horse. Castelo is one of the most prestigious
