The Camino de Santiago is the route of Romanesque architecture. The rise of the Camino in the 11th and 12th century coincides with the developement of religious architecture like convents, cathedrals, churches, chapels and other, non religious buildings which served the pilgrims during their pilgrimage, like hospitals, bridges and crosses to mark the route. The battle to chase the Arabs out of Spain that started in Covadonga, spread to the south and where they found Celtic settlements, Roman camps or Arabic fortresses, they build forts and castles to protect the newly gained territories.
The Camino de Santiago is a piece of art in itself that was influenced by the different cultures that the thousands of pilgrims brought with them from all over Europe. If you would like to know more about the architecture and art of the Camino de Santiago, we can recommend the following books::
