Known Pilgrims

Shirley MacLaine´s book
Through the more than 1200 years that The Camino of Santiago is being done, there have been many known pilgrims doing it. The first one which is registered is Gotescalco, archbishop of Le Puy, a french town, which reached Santiago in 950 with a big amount of followers.

In 1139, a french clergyman writes first touristic guide of the history; the Calixtinus Codex; which tells with all deitalis his pilgrinism from Roncesvalles to Santiago; just like a complete pilgrim guide which gives information about places to stay, gastronomy, recommendations, art, architecture, and dangers that may occur through the Way.

The Codex Calixtinus
In 1488 the Catholic Kings travelled to Santiago of Compostela to honour “Santiago Matamoros”, which symbol was of great utiliy in the fight agains the arabs in Spain.

The pilgrinism could also be done as a delegation; in a document of 1312 it is detailed that a gentleman called Yves Lebreton did the pilgrinism for a countess named Artois, which did not have to move from her castle.

But many pilgrims didn´t want to be recognised, as people was walking the way to Santiago for some tragics reasons, like murdering, so we will never know how many pilgrims had a hidden reason.

The pilgrim. Paulo Coelho
Now in modern times, famous people have done the Camino, some of them incognitus, others as a way of getting inspiration for their professions and others which have obtained good money from these experiences such as Shirley McLaine, who at her 60’s she followed the French Way between June and July 1994, and afterwards she wrote her experiences in the book El Camino. The brasilian Paulo Coelho, who wrote a book “The Compostela Pilgrim (a magician diary)”, which has been for many people the reference book of the Camino; even though many people believe this book as a “pilgrim in a car”. A big majority of brasilian and portuguese pilgrims is due to the popularity of this book, due to the popularity of the author in this languages
